Waite Phillips (January 19, 1883–January 27, 1964) purchased land in northern New Mexico near Cimmarron, which would eventually became Philturn Scout Ranch and ultimately Philmont Ranch. Upon the land he built a mansion called Villa Philmonte. He later donated most of the ranch to the Boy Scouts of America to found Philmont Scout Ranch.
