Minibear (sometimes spelled Mini-bear or Mini bear) is the semi-affectionate nickname for any number of small, furred animals in Philmont's backcountry, mainly squirrels and chipmunks. They are so named because they are many times reported to chew through the side of a pack or just about anything in order to get to smellables, thus doing as much damage as a regular sized bear. They are most common in the South Country, though they are seen with regularity in the North Country. It should be advised not to attempt to scare off minibears with force, as killing them may cause an expulsion from Philmont, as some of the minibears are a protected species.
